According to the theory of Dr. Mary Newport, ketone bodies which are produced by our organism during the coconut oil digestion, might be brain’s alternative fuel.
She considers that coconut oil has significant beneficial properties for people fighting with Alzheimer’s disease.
This could be one of the major health discoveries in years, if her theory proves to be accurate.
Dr. Mary Newport explains her husband’s experience with Alzheimer’s disease. During his mid-50s, he suffered from progressive dementia for a period of about 5 years, and then he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease after a MRI test.
Dr. Newport explains she often found him confused and forgetful of where to find things like spoons, or water from the fridge. He couldn’t remember to tell her the phone messages that were left for her.
She noticed that although her husband doesn’t have short-term memory, the information existed somewhere in his brain.
Her intuition was telling her that it was somehow connected to his diet. Her husband started taking medications in order to slow down the disease, but he lost weight, became depressed, and forgot how to use a calculator, how to cook, and other simple tasks.
Although he forgot how to do many everyday actions, he was spending the entire day working in his garage or in the yard, and his physical condition remained good.
Dr. Newport got intrigued by several studies about the potential use of ketone bodies or medium chain triglycerides for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Moreover, medium chain triglycerides are considered to potentially treat Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, drug resistant epilepsy, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis.
As she explains, ketone bodies can help in the heart recovering after an acute attack, recovering of the brain after an oxygen loss in newborns through adults, and can reduce cancer. Sometimes kids with drug resistant epilepsy show results from exceptionally low carbohydrate ketogenic diet.
When glucose is unavailable, the cells in our body can use ketone bodies as an alternative fuel. Our body doesn’t normally have ketone bodies circulating in it, but only when we’re starving for days, or when we’re on an extremely low-carb diet like Atkins.
According to Dr. Newport, the neurons in specific brain areas of a person with Alzheimer’s disease can’t take in glucose because of insulin resistance, so they slowly die.
But if ketone bodies are available to these cells, the cells have chances to remain alive and continue with their function.
Dr. Mary Newport begun giving her husband Steve a daily dose of coconut oil. After 60 days, she remembers her husband being happy, alert, talkative, and even making jokes.
Moreover, the developed tremor he had was reduced, and he could concentrate on one thing as oppose to previously when he was easily distracted.
In order to ensure that his body has ketone bodies circulating continuously, he receives 2 tbsp. of coconut oil twice a day.
Dr. Newport says that today, after 1 year of this natural treatment, Steve is a different person. Although he sometimes has difficulty coming up with words, he actively participates in conversations, recognizes relatives, and has much more animated facial expressions.
Both of them are very pleased with his condition right now, and if the consumption of coconut oil stops or slows down his disease, every drop that he takes will pay off.
