People have been existing for 200,000 years in its present form (Homo sapiens), but before it became what is now, it went through many evolutionary steps to get where we are today.
We can find plenty of proofs of this continuous development. There are some people who represent this development because it has left some marks on us, more than just the body hair. Even at the present time, there are rudiments of the so-called humans of the distant past.
These examples are the most interesting ones:
- The tendon in your wrist
Put your hands on some table pointing your palms upwards. Connect the thumb with the little finger and lift the fist a little. Are your tendons visible? In certain cases they are, in some not.
Why is this so? The palmaris longus tendon muscle is a muscle that is positioned between the upper arm and the wrist. The wrist movements of this muscle are no longer needed today, and for that reason it is not visible more in 13% of the world population.
The interesting thing is that this muscle does not affect the person’s strength in any way and except visually, it doesn’t have any adverse effects.
- The pink point in the corner of the eye
You might have noticed the pink point in the corner of your eyes, but you had no idea why is it there. Almost everyone has this pink point, although it does not have any function anymore. It’s characteristic of the so-called third eyelid, which is normally seen in reptiles when their eyes are closed. This is a kind of some protective layer of the eye. It is a memorial of the evolution, despite the fact it is no longer a protection of the eye, because we now have the eyelashes.
- Wiggling ears
Nowadays the wiggling ears are only part of the show or part of a trick when someone makes jokes, despite the fact that they used to have a very important function. Namely, wiggling ears can improve the hearing in people, and they may become able to locate sounds in their environment and recognize danger quicker and better. This is usually a characteristic of the cats.
- Wisdom tooth
Have you ever had to remove the wisdom tooth? Well, if you have, you are most likely a jinx. Have you ever wondered what the purpose of these teeth is if they only appear to bother us? The answer is hidden in the past, because people in the past used to eat more grass roots and they had to chew a lot more. And since our food was becoming lighter and softer, that lead to our jaw becoming smaller, since we did not need all of our teeth anymore. The majority of primates and monkeys also do not have wisdom teeth anymore, but gorillas, since they are vegetarians, still have them.
- Getting goose bumps
You were cold, or you just got the goose bumps on the skin because of something else, yet some dots appeared on your skin and hair literally stands upright. Why this is so? Humans used to have a real fur, therefore goosing back then had a real function. Specifically, when the hair is up, it’s stored more heat, and in case of some kind of a danger, with their hair up people used to look bigger and much more dangerous for the potential attackers.
Domestic cats and many other animals are now a living proof of this.
